Buy Mom’s Elephant
This was one of those weird, unexpected moments. One day, my mom suddenly said, “It’s a little-known fact that I like elephants.” Well, no one knew this, so I decided to paint her a watercolor of elephants as a surprise. At the time, I had three little kids, a full-time job at a sign shop, and was working on my master’s degree at night, so things were pretty hectic. But I got up an extra hour early every morning, around 5 AM, just to work on this painting.
When it was finally done, I found a nice frame and prepared it for her birthday. Before I gave it to her, I told my sister that she was really going to love the gift. The moment came to open it, and as my mom pulled back the wrapping, my sister threw up her hands, made a pouty face, and walked away. I was shocked and immediately ran after her. “What’s wrong?” I asked. Her reply? “I thought you were going to paint something.”
I explained that I did paint something.
But anyway… my mom loved it! She still has it in her living room to this day.
